Near the former shaft of Staatsmijn Hendrik in the cozy Brunssum is our B & B called Mijn-werkje. The B&B is situated between the cozy city center and the beautiful nature reserve Brunssumerheide. It is also ideally located along the exit road to Landgraaf and Kerkrade, making the whole of South Limburg easily accessible. At the beginning of 2021 we decided to realize a B&B to let other people enjoy the beautiful surroundings and also the Mining (workers) past of Brunssum. We are proud to welcome our guests. Most of the work was done by ourselves. This is where the origin of the name 'Mijn-werkje' lies. Of course, it also refers to our regional history of mining.
Layout B&B
Through a private access you enter the kitchen / sitting room. Here you can cook, eat and spend the evening (TV and free wifi available). You will also find some original items that were used in the mine. Through this living room you enter the bedroom. Behind a comfortable double bed you can see a beautiful photo of the former Hendrik State Mine. Even the night lights are made from original miners’ helmets. Behind the bedroom is the bathroom that is fully equipped with a toilet, shower and a sink with large mirror (hair dryer available). Finally, the private garden is accessible through the bathroom. The first part is covered and offers ample seating. In the modest garden you can enjoy the sun and the tranquility of beautiful South Limburg.
History state mine Hendrik
Brunssum and other parts of South Limburg derive their character largely from the mining history of this region. The Hendrik State Mine was a coal mine in Brunssum. It was built at this location because it was where the coal basin was located. Between 1915 and 1963, mainly gas-rich fatty coal was produced here. This was processed into 'coke', fuel for industrial use. More than 61 million tons Coal was brought up in this State Mine. The State Mine had four shafts, through which miners were brought underground to great depths. Shaft IV was the deepest shaft in the Netherlands. In 1963 the Hendrik became the Emma-Hendrik group and therefore the work down there stopped to become the new AFCENT headquarters in 1967.
